Meet Rick Hellams
Rick Hellams has dedicated his life to serving the community he calls home. His commitment to hard work began early—at just fourteen years old, picking peaches on Holly Springs Road in Lyman. This formative experience instilled in him the values of perseverance and community connection that would define his career and public service.
A proud graduate of James F. Byrnes High School, Rick pursued higher education at Spartanburg Technical College and the University of South Carolina Upstate, where he studied Sociology—a field that deepened his understanding of community dynamics and human connection. He built a distinguished career at Cryovac Sealed Air, where his dedication and expertise earned him respect among colleagues and peers alike.
Public Service and Community Leadership
In 2016, Rick answered the call to public service and was elected to the Lyman Town Council, where he has proven to be a transformative force for positive change. His tenure on Council has been marked by innovative initiatives that strengthen both community pride and economic vitality.
Rick has earned a reputation as a true community advocate, with residents describing him as “the heart of Lyman.” His deep concern for people drives every decision he makes, whether championing initiatives to support the local business community or working tirelessly to beautify the town. Understanding that vibrant local commerce is essential to community prosperity, Rick established networking opportunities for small business owners and created the Business of the Month program to celebrate entrepreneurial excellence. His commitment to environmental stewardship and civic pride is evident in his leadership on beautification efforts, including spearheading Lyman’s participation in the Adopt-a-Highway program, organizing community cleanup initiatives, and installing memorial tributes throughout the town. Rick’s vision is simple yet powerful: to build a Lyman that every resident can take pride in calling home.
Rick is a graduate of the prestigious Municipal Elected Officials Institute of Government through the Municipal Association of South Carolina, equipping him with advanced knowledge in municipal governance and policy. He also completed the Spartanburg County Citizens Academy, further expanding his expertise in local government operations and community development.
Today
Now in retirement, Rick continues his unwavering commitment to service, dedicating his time to caring for friends, neighbors, and the broader Lyman community. His hands-on approach to leadership and genuine concern for others have made him not just an elected official, but a trusted advocate and friend to all who call Lyman home.
